What is the meaning of Geometry?

Geometry

Geometry is the oldest branch of mathematics. The word geo means ‘earth’ and metron stands for measurement. Hence the word geometry means measurement of earth. Geometry is a branch of mathematics in which we study the size, shape, and relative position of figures. The Greek mathematician ‘Euclid’ is considered the father of geometry.

Introduction of Geometry

Geometry is the most important branch of mathematics. Geometry has practical applications in geography, engineering, and architecture. Rene Descartes revolutionize the science of geometry by introducing the concept of analytical geometry.

The development of analytical geometry leads to the development of calculus. We cannot imagine engineering without calculus. Now day’s geometry and physics are closely linked. You cannot understand physics without the knowledge of geometry and physics give practical meaning to geometry.

Geometry has wide application in space science and astronomy. The combination of physics and geometry helps us to explore the world and universe in which we live.

In geometry, we study the properties of point, plain, and line. We learn how to draw different geometrical shapes such as triangle, circle, quadrilateral and we study different properties regarding them. We also learn to calculate the area and parameters of geometrical figures.

In solid geometry, we study solid shapes such as cones, cylinders, spheres, pyramids. We learn to calculate the volume of this solid figure. In which is the sub-branch of trigonometry we study the relationship between angles and sides of triangles. Trigonometry has wide application in the navigation of planes and ships at sea.

In civil engineering, geometry plays a crucial role. The first thing you have to do before building a house is you have to measure the area of your plot. For that, you use the formula given by geometry. The next thing you do is draw a map of your house to decide which room will occupy how much space. Measurement plays an important role in constructing any structure and measurement is done according to the rules of geometry.

mechanical engineering deals with the study of machines. The mechanical part of the machine must be perfectly designed. So they work smoothly and efficiently. While designing these mechanical parts you first have to make its blueprint for that you have to use your geometrical skills and then manufactured the mechanical part. Any miscalculation will result in the machine not working properly and it will total waste of time and money.

In computer science, concepts of geometry are used to make animation, video games, etc. Today we see lots of 3D animation and 3D games which are design by the application of geometric Principles.

Trigonometry is the important branch of geometry in which we study the relationship between the sides and angles of triangles. Trigonometry is use full to calculate the distance of distant objects from the earth such as stars sun and the moon. Trigonometry is used in the navigation of planes in the sky and ships in the ocean. All this magic is possible only because of Geometry.

Conclusion:

Geometry is the queen of science we cannot predict anything in science without the help of geometry. Geometry gives perfection to science. Therefore we should learn and understand geometry with great pleasure.
