Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi, was always interested to eradicate the Britishers as well as all the dirt and unhygienic in the country. Eradication of the British is done. But now it’s time to end all dirt in the country.

How Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Launched:

To make this possible, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi started the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ (Clean India Campaign) on the date 2nd October 2014. It was the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The mission started from ‘Rajghat’ (spot of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation), in New Delhi.

Prime Minister took this step to change the image of India. Today we see dirt and unhygienic everywhere. Prime Minister himself take part in this campaign. He motivates people about hygiene and tells them the necessity of it.

He said, “by cleaning India we can give tribute to Mahatma on his birth anniversary.” Further, he insists citizens come and join in this mission. Since citizens take part in this, on a large scale, soon it becomes a national-level event. Today it covers all states of India as well as it is appreciated by the UN.

The campaign is administered by the Indian government. All government officials, soldiers, industrialists, and common people take part in this campaign. Schools, colleges, NGOs, business groups, and all also took part in this mission. The campaign has not only improved the lives of crores of Indians but has also played a significant role to achieve the goal set by it.

The core objective of this campaign is to make India free from ‘open defecation.’ This is possible only when, there is an individual household toilet. The government decided to make the nation free from open defecation by 2nd October 2019. The quality of life of the rural citizens will be enhanced through it.

In rural areas, people do not have proper toilet facilities. Hence they go outside on the farms or on the road for a toilet. This is the reason for the creation of many hygiene problems. To eradicate this situation, the government helps people by building toilets.

Main Objective of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

  • Building toilets on large scale.
  • Organizing camps to tell the importance of cleanliness in rural areas.
  • Teach students the importance of sanitation.
  • Various awards are given to encourage people toward social hygiene.
Financial help is provided to build toilets.
  • Famous actors and personalities taking part in this movement.

Mission also focused on the waste management and recycling of waste. Every day India produces tonnes of electronic, medical, household, and all types of waste. Some percent of this waste can be reused if it is managed properly. Such kinds of steps are also taken by the government.

India is one of the dirtiest countries in the world. We as Indians must change this scenario. To achieve this, India needs a cleanliness drive like ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’

Every person needs clean air, water, and atmosphere to live. People clean their homes but neglected the surroundings. We have to give up this type of thinking. As we clean our property, it is our duty to clean the nation’s property also.

Swaccha Sarvekshan is a survey of sanitation, hygiene, and cleanliness. It presents awards to cities and towns in India. It was started in 2016, by Prime Minister. The first of its kind was given to Mysuru. Such awards are also given to rural areas as well as railway stations.
